This documentary charts the events that lead to Josef von Sternberg’s film of I, CLAUDIUS never being completed. It is a mesmerising piece of cine-archaeology, revealing poignant moments from what might have been one of the world’s mightiest epics. An impressing cast including CHARLES LAUGHTON, MERLE OBERON, FLORA ROBSON and EMLYN WILLIAMS assembled in 1937 to make this doomed masterpiece. The story traces the inner torments of the actors and the financial excesses of the producers. The drama is recreated before our very eyes from the almost forgotten original rushes and edited film retrieved from the now overgrown and derelict Denham Studios. Presented by DIRK BOGARDE. A BBC-TV production in association with London Films.
