Adapted from Emile Zola’s celebrated novel, this series maps the tragic love affair between Thérése Raquin and Laurent. Love drives the ill fated couple to commit murder, but the knowledge of their crime haunts their eventual marriage and finally forces them apart. Watched over by Thérése’s paralysed mother-in-law, they find living together unbearable and separately plot to kill one another. They chose the same moment, each tragically understanding the other’s intentions. Wordlessly they drink poison from the same glass and die in agony, both victims of their fateful and all consuming passion. Starring KATE NELLIGAN, BRIAN COX and MONA WASHBOURNE. A BBC/London Films production.
